Outskirts (Boris Barnet, 1933)
This early Soviet sound film is set in 1914 at the start of the First World War. It starts out with light hearted and comical scenes depicting the country life of simple farmers and workers, but quickly turns grim and pessimistic once the characters are sent to the front line and captured by the Germans.
