Salt for Svanetia (Mikhail Kalatozov, 1930)
Although Mikhail Kalatozov is known for his post-Stalinist films, including The Cranes are Flying (1957), he made his first film much earlier, in 1930. An example of the ethnographic film, Salt for Svanetia offers a snapshot of a rural Georgian community and the difficulties faced by them due to their lack of roads leading over the surrounding mountains. The film ends with a celebration of Soviet workers who have arrived to build roads leading to this impoverished community.
