The Great Consoler (Lev Kuleshov, 1933)
The Great Consoler was based on the life of the American writer O. Henry, with a fictionalized narrative of the writer’s struggles with the concept of social obligation in creating art. The film was created at the dawn of the era of socialist realism and drew unwanted attention from the Congress due to it subject matter. Kuleshov had long had a difficult time creating films with American subject matter, including The Extraordinary Adventures of Mr. West in the Land of the Bolsheviksand The Death Ray, and this film spelled the end of his feature filmmaking career.[1]
