The Cigarette Girl of Mosselprom (Yuri Zhelyabuzhsky, 1924)
This Soviet romantic comedy satirizes the mania for Western movies that was sweeping the country at this time while also emulating the polished Western style.[1] The film tells the story of a young naïve girl who is transformed into a film star by an overzealous film crew.
Cigarette Girl became one of the most popular movies of its decade among audiences. However, Soviet critics, who held that films should perform a social function, failed to see anything socialist in its ideology and quickly dismissed it as light and escapist.[2]
