Ivan (Aleksandr Dovzhenko, 1932)
Like Dovzhenko’s Ukraine Trilogy, which consists of Earth (1930), Arsenal (1928) and Zvenigora (1929), Ivan is concerned with the lyrical rhythms of country life as well as the theme of the collectivization that accompanied industrialization. The story is of a young boy and his father, two successful farmers who leave to work on the construction of the Dniepr River Dam. There the boy finds that his work is inadequate, and submits to the discipline of education. Through the course of the story, Dovzhenko presents a celebration of Soviet organization and the promise of youth.
