The Eleventh Year (Dziga Vertov, 1928)
One of Vertov’s montage-driven documentaries, The Eleventh Year displays the feats of Soviet technology and construction. According to Vertov himself, the film uses ‘the language of the eye’ as well as the ‘socialist language’ in its documentary depictions of the accomplishments of the Soviet state in its eleventh year.[1] Although the subject matter of the film is quite simple, the construction of the images create a complex film that continues to be striking long after the ode to socialist power has become irrelevant.
